I opened a case with support on this, but thought I'd throw a wider net since it may be out of scoep...

We have a department that is building its own isolated MOSS site on its own MOSS servers (separate from our enterprise shared MOSS environment.) I'm not familiar with exactly what the content/purpose will be, only that they want to be able to get some web analytics on utilization of various content.

They toyed with but abandoned spoofing a W3C log and putting parameters in there, so we could do simple log file analysis.

Now they're asking if we can tag it instead. We do have the in-house software and the SDC running; my question is more about if/how would you apply the tag (JS and various META's) on MOSS.

Is it possible, and are there conditions or best practices, for applying the SDC tag to a MOSS site?

Thanks...

Wow. I don't have a clue what MOSS is but I do know that this item might get more attention if you put it into the "installation & setup" part of the Software forum.

One thought would be to add the the SDC tag to your site's master page within the HTML tags, which will allow you to analyze all the sub-pages, not just the home page.

While not a Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) site, it makes sense that you can/should be able to do this.

If you can't find the info on Webtrends on how/where to tag, check out some og the Google postings on how to add GA tags to your MOSS site. There will be enough similarity to meet your needs. - - Dave

Thanks, Chris and Dave. Helpfully, WT Support was able to provide me with a white paper entitled "Guide to Using WebTrends with Portals" which has some general guidance and some MOSS-specific example. That should be enough to at least set our MOSS developers in the right direction.

Unfortunately, the project has not progressed to the point of tagging or analytics; they're having significant problems getting the MOSS site and various backends or feeds working (don't know the details.) So it hasn't been tried here yet.

Support just emailed the general portal-tagging doc to me, and I've forwarded it on and misplaced the original! They didn't give me a link, and I can't find it in the KB; I'm sure they can send it to you.

However, I did just stumble across this newer doc, which may be of some guidance:

End of 2009, we called upon WebTrends services to get SDC tags integrated in MOSS 2007.

Worked out pretty well and did a good job. It requires customization of several MOSS library and containers + JS code.

But then you can track almost everything: download, document events, view parts, breadcrumbs, users,...

It is quite straightforward as long your MOSS implementation is not too customized.

1) I agree with Chris G - this should be moved to Installation/Setup.
2) If you have your own SDC and Software licence, and presuming you are okay with allocating some of your licence for this purpose, you should be making a DCSID and assigning it to the new MOSS site.
3) As M.Notte mentions, you should be prepared to do some custom work with JavaScript to get the tags working in MOSS. I have done some work on this recently, so I can tell you that your level of investment in JS coding will depend on your reporting needs.
