What's the best way to estimate concurrent users for a portion of a website? I see visits broken down by hours - is that as close as it gets?

Yes.
You're probably trying to work on capacity planning issues, right? Look at the peaks, then. Peak hour of peak day isn't a bad place to start. There's a queuing theory formula that assumes a certain shape of the distribution within an hour (skewed is a good assumption if you do email campaigns) --- which gets combined with the # of visits in an hour and a visit length measure, and you can get a decent idea of peak concurrent visitors. Don't forget that one visitor = 2 server connections. I wish I still had that formula. I would guess that a lot of mechanical and other kinds of physical engineers would have it around. Chris G |

(Total number of visitors per day * duration of the visit * peak) / minutes per day In this formula, duration of the visit is represented in minutes. |
